Public Library Field Trip

Today, we got to visit the Southeast Branch Public Library. It was a quick 1hr tour. We were introduced to the children's library and got to check out books! We also had a read aloud session with one of the local librarians.
All books that were checked out can be returned to any Jacksonville Public Library.

Please note: If you are unable to return the books to the local library, please have your child bring them back to the classroom and we will make arrangements for them to be returned. These books were checked out by the public library, we have no record of them in the classroom.

BEAM Food Drive

We would like to thank all of the families that helped donate food for our Season of Giving project this year.
The 1st grade classes collected food for the Beach Emergency Assistance Ministy, BEAM, to stock their Food Panty this holiday season.
We had so much food collected that every 1st grader was able to place 1-2+ items into the BEAM donation van. With 6 double classes averaging at 37 students each, let's just say we had A LOT of food :)

The BEAM staff was blown away but the turn out. BEAM serves many families in our school and neighorhood communities. We are so proud of our students for being great community contributors!

Thanksgiving Preparation

Wow! How fast has this year gone by? Thanksgiving is next week and we are in full swing to prepare for it!

We are so excited for our Thanksgiving Luncheon coming up on Tuesday, November 24th. Please don't forget to RSVP in your students blue folder and sign up to bring a dish through the website: www.signupgenius.com/go/8050a4ca9a72aa20-thanksgiving

Our students are working hard for their class performance. We can't wait to impress our luncheon guest! 😊

Watching Pow Wow

Our new friends to Chets and  those who may have missed the first half of their Kindergarten year, got to experience Kindergarten Pow Wow today.

1st grade was invited to watch the opening ceremony to the Kindergarten Pow Wow.
From our students that got to participate in it last year to those that have never seen it before, it was an amazing experience to watch. With a bit of cold in the air mixed with the smoke of the Tribe Game fire, the morning was beautiful and the kindergarten classes did a great job. 👍

Forces and Change in Motion

Our class has started it's study on Force and Motion!

We conducted a lab that involved rolling several different balls on the hallway tile. Can your student explain to you what is going on?

Make sure you're asking your student about what science labs we are doing in the classroom.

Stay tuned to find out what our science workshop is doing with this new unit!
Some of our essential questions for this unit are: How do objects start to move? How can we change an object's motion? and What is the difference between push and pull?

Fall Math Fun

Taking a break from finishing off our first math module, the class did a fun fall math practice. We used several elements from Module 1 to show what we know.
Our activity:

1. Students made sure to write their name on their paper.
2. Students were given a bag of foam stickers and asked to create a math problem.
3. Students used the information from their math problem to complete a number bond.
4. Students completed several number sentences. We provided 4 different ways to show addition number sentences and 2 ways to show subtraction number sentences.
5. Students were challenged to show their thinking using a number path. Using two different colored crayons, they showed how they can count up and count back to solve an equation.
6. Students stuck the foam stickers to their worksheet.

The students did a great job creating their own math problems and competing the number bonds and sentences. We are continuing to work on using the number path to count up and back.

Check out these fun fall practice sheets while they hanging in the hallway in front of our classroom. 😊

Veterans Day 11/11/15

Our school was closed today in honor of the Veterans Day holiday.

Yesterday, we spent the morning learning about Veterans Day and why the day is important.

We read the book America's White Table

A story about a family honoring service members fallen, missing, or held captive in the line of duty.

We learn about Veterans Day by researching through nonfiction books and the Internet (history.com)
- Veterans Day originated on Nov. 11, 1919 the first anniversary of the end of World War I.
- Veterans Day was first named Armistice Day.
- Veterans Day pays tribute to all American veterans-living or dead-but especially giving thanks to living veterans who served their country honorably during war or peacetime.

Students made Thank You cards for Veterans in our local community :)
THANK YOU to all of the brave men and women who have served and continue to serve our country.

We hope everyone had a great Veterans Day.

Cummer Museum Field Trip

We had a great time at the Riverside Park and Cummer Museum for our first field trip this year!

The Riverside Park was beautiful! It has a great playground, lots of space, a beautiful pond and plenty of spots to have lunch.

At the Cummer, they had awesome interactive activities and even an art project for us to make.

Touring the Art Museum was beautiful.

The beautiful weather made exploring the gardens very enjoyable.

FYI: EVERY Tuesday from 4-6pm and every 1st Saturday of the month the Cummer Museum has FREE admission!

Don't forget to ask your child about our awesome field trip!

Have a wonderful long weekend!

Literary Parade & Fall Celebration

When you start the day dressed as your favorite book character, you know it's going to be a great day!
We had so much fun munching on our monster snack, listening to read alouds, working on crafts and doing some candy sorting math.

A very special ~Thank You!~ to Mrs. KK and all the friends in the Media center, who helped find costumes for every kindergatener and 1st grades who didn't have something to wear for our parade.

Thank you, Mrs. O'leary and Mrs. Permuy's 3rd grade class for including us in your writing celebration. We had a great time listening to all of the stories your children wrote.

We hope everyone who made it out to the Fall Carnival had a great time!

Egg-citing Science

Did you know CCE has Chickens? The 5th grade science classes invited us over to check out the chicken coops, hens, eggs and 3 week old chicks.

Ask you child what they learned about the hens ear color and how it connects to the eggs they lay.

Literary Pumpkin Week

This week at CCE is Literary Pumpkin Week!

Every classroom has created a literary pumpkin masterpiece! We have turned pumpkins into some of our favorite book characters.

This year our 1st grade class voted on the book: Skeleton Cat

Make sure you check out the school lobby to see all of the awesome literary pumpkins!

Great Job CCE!

Sketch Note Taking

Have you ever tried to take notes and felt like you missed something or didn't write something down? Try Sketch Note Taking!

Notes are to capture important ideas for future reference. So, what do you do when you don't know how to spell the words you want to write and you miss something really important because you're behind a couple parts? Try Sketch Notes!

Our class tried to take some notes on the story The Curious Garden. As Mrs. Sihabouth read the book aloud to the class (hiding the pictures) students drew what they saw in their heads onto their paper. After we took notes, we read the book again showing the students the pictures that the illustrator drew. It was really cool to see the connection between the story images and the student drawings.

Students partnered up to retell the story using their sketch notes.
Here are a couple examples of their sketch notes:

For some students, we found this to be a challenging activity but at a good challenge. It kept everyone engaged and focused. It also had students really thinking and creating their own mind movie of the book they were being read.

Some of Our Favorite Parts of the Curious Garden

Gabriel: It was the guy watering the garden.
Jolie: The part when everyone helped the garden.
Morgan: All the kids were helping him make the garden.
Robbie: When the garden grew on all the houses.
Karan: The cover.
Ava: When he was a little boy and he started planting the garden.
Jude: When he found the garden.
Anthony: When he grew the garden.
Nolan: When he grew up to be a real gardener.
Ekantika: When the city was covered with the garden.
Cameron: When the garden grew bigger and bigger.
Loren: When the plants ended up in all sorts of places.
Monroe: When it started small and turned in to a giant garden.
Carter: When the town covered in gas and it changed to green.
Emma: It was pretty.
Jordan: When I drew the rail way.
Amarion: When he grew the big tree.
Isabel: When he first saw the garden.
Airabella: When the boy grew bigger and the garden grew bigger.
Elsid: When he was watering the small tree and it turned into a really big tree.
Tania: When the city grew into the garden.
Shyloah: When he went up the stairs and found the little garden.
Evelyn: I liked when the flowers were pretty.
Luke: The front page.
Hayden: The flowers bloomed.
Citalli: When the flowers grew big.
Austin: When saw the garden.

We loved this activity and are looking forward to doing it more with the class throughout the year.

We've got Field Trip Shirts

We are so excited to have Field Trip shirts this year!
We have enlisted the help of several local businesses to sponsor some of the 1st grade classes.
Their donations have helped us to cover the cost for students to have a field trip shirt and save our families from the extra expense.

Our class received a gracious donation from the local Jacksonville buisness, LOCALTAILS

Field Trip shirts are kept at school in the classroom.
We will wear them on field trips and our end of the year field day.
Safety is our top priority!
These shirts help us identify students when out on a field trip.
Each 1st grade class has an assigned color and when you're out on a field trip with 240 1st graders, these shirts come in handy!

Thank you LOCALTAILS!!!

Timed Fluency Work in Math

We will be taking a timed fluency quiz in our classroom on addition facts up to 5 on Friday. Students will be given 90 seconds to complete 25 questions.

Attached to this weeks homework was a practice sheet. These are facts that students should have mastered in Kindergarten. Adding the timed element does put pressure on students, even when it applies to something they have mastered.

Make sure you are practicing using a timer at home so that your child becomes comfortable. We have been doing timed activities in our daily math workshop for the past 3 weeks.

The homework fluency practice sheet:

Our quiz will look very similar to the homework.

Thank you for your support at home!

Scholastic Orders

Have your ever ordered from Scholastic?
Our class has an account that makes it very easy to order and expand your home library!

There are two ways to order:

1- Flyer Orders
Every month we will send home a paper Flyer. You are welcome to select the books you would like to order and send the payment in with your child in their Blue Home-School Folder.

2- Scholastic Book Club Online
Www.Scholastic.com/readingclub
Class Code: KJNXX

All orders will be shipped to the school and distributed to the students.

Ordering books are great holiday and birthday gifts. We don't mind making arrangements for orders to be picked up from the office or after school so students aren't aware of such an awesome treat.

Everytime an order is made the class gets points that can be used to build our classroom library.

Thank you!
Have fun ordering :)
